A big wave of black technology fight against the “trembling” Parkinson’s disease

Industry News 2017.05.06

When “black technology” meet the “trembling” Parkinson’s disease, what kind of chemical reaction will happen?

This year, “the World Parkinson’s Day” came from “trembling” on 11, Apr. The disease that is known as the third killer of the elderly has attacked more than two million patients, which nearly accounts for about half of the world's Parkinson’s patients. However, a recently public research report on Parkinson showed that 90% of interviewees are not familiar with Parkinson’s disease.

Hazard and cognition are disproportionate, the clinic treatment method of Parkinson’s disease is relatively limited as well. Therefore, now the main treatment purpose for doctors is to know how to relieve the symptoms of the patients and improve the effectiveness of rehabilitation training. In recent years, a big wave of “black technology” is coming with the assistant rehabilitation treatment except for the medication and surgery and has become the “secret weapon” of the neurologists.

Sport: Remotely controlled brain pacemaker

As the new technology of surgical treatment on Prkinson’s disease, the brain pacemaker send out the weak pulse through the electrodes implanted in the brain to inhibit the abnormal brain nerve signals that cause Parkinson's disease, which can help recover the original ability of activity and self-care. The rate of improvement can reach more than 80% and achieve the universal approval on safety and effectiveness both at home and abroad.

Hu Hua, the director of the iMDT consultation center and neurosurgery of Shulan Hospital, said that the key to the brain pacemaker operation is the specific consultation and the post-operation management. What’s more, the implanted parts won’t affect the patient's daily life.

And not only that, the function of wireless remote control is also linked to it by means of Internet technology. Doctors can adjust the performance parameters through the program controller, also the patients needn’t to go to the hospital again for the adjustment of the stimulus parameters. Once the “remote control” is pressed, the patients’ body tremor will be eliminated and the patients can recover the ability of independent life. Deputy director of functional neurosurgery at Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, Hu Yongsheng said.

However, it is not suitable to all patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease to implant the brain pacemaker, “ the time for implanting the brain pacemaker is also very important”. The director of neurodegenerative diseases in neurology department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Feng Tao said that the ripe time for operation usually follows behind the dyskinesia that occurs on patients. The time for treatment will be lost if the patients meet the condition such as falling down and cognitive impairment, etc.

Self-care: Intelligent spoon and shoes

The involuntary tremor of hands and feet can bring troubles to the independent eating and walking of Parkinson's patients.

At the end of 2016, Google exploited the intelligent spoon whose handle has two electric engine, which can recognize the change of direction in 3D space. When the hands and arms of patients begin trembling, the spoon can keep correcting and miantain the spoon at the level in order to prevent the food from falling out of the spoon.

And the handle of the spoon is also designed with a strap, which can be tied on patients’ hand to prevent the spoon from falling.

Although the disease can’t be cued, reduce the care of others and improve their ability of independent eating can bring those Parkinson’s patients more dignity.

Delaware university put forward the Parkinson’s shoes by applying a similar theory. The central processing unit is installed into the insoles, it can neutralize the patient's own uncontrollable shaking by controlling the vibration, which not only reduces the difficulty of walking but also increases the speed of walking, helps patients keep balance and improve his abnormal walking.

Monitoring: The collective physical data of smart wristbands

Differing from the bracelets that count step, heart rate and blood pressure, the smart wristbands are mianly used to collect the body data of Parkinson’s patients and convert the data into readable information that doctors can recognize so that it can allow doctors to fine-tune the medication. In addition, the wristbands can remind the patients of regularly taking prescribed drugs and relevant record will be done after taking the medicine.

In order t o know well the general condition of patients, they have to wear the smart wristbands for 10 days. It will measure the slow movement of the patients when the symptoms occur.

The intelligence of the device lies in it can also measure the level of “dyskinesia”, more advanced symptoms of Parkinson's disease and the involuntary muscle’s movement. By fine-tune the level of drug treatment, the patients will have more time to get close to the normal condition when the symptoms begin to appear.
